It is wonderful to be here in Florence with such a great group of people. I am trying to settle in to the new schedule and meet everyone- I still haven't met all of the architecture students yet.
I have been enjoying our first assignment- I think it is helping me to be more aware of my surroundings. I have been noticing all sorts of things I don't think I would have otherwise. Today was day trips to Pistoia and Lucca. I loved seeing the della Robbia pieces in these towns. It was a lot of fun but I am exhausted. I am feeling a bit out of practice with my drawing. I am hoping to work on this. In boca lupo, Allison

Maggie and I took the train to Ravenna this Saturday. The town was much quieter and more peaceful than Florence, with the eerie-feeling of a post-Communist era war town. The mosaics there were the most beautiful pieces of art I have seen yet - gold and teal and rainbows. We sat sketching in every freezing cold stone chamber as an excuse to stay and look as long as possible.
Maggie McLoughlin's italian adventures
Italy has been buon felicitas for the most part. The best sight so far has been Ravenna with it amazing mosaics. they were over the top and entirley too sophisticated not to be taken seriously...but they had rainbows and animals jumpng through hoops which kept everything from sliding to overly pretentious. The Duomo was pretty sweet but its kinda ridiculous...like it stormed one day and God coughed up a giant building and it landed in the middle of florence...probably smooshed some nice construction workers and a tourist or two. Lifes been nice, new, at times lonely (in my homestay I don't communicate well in italian so I sometimes am just cut off in the wind) and always a wee bit cold. I can't wait to see a nutrient along the arno, i read a book when i was a kid where the main character was a river rat named mike or something. hope things are good with you. the blurry pic is a cat that was crawling around the etruscan ruins like a mystical protector, quite friendly.

The First Two Weeks
Having just arrived in this beautiful country two weeks ago, I have to say that I'm still adjusting.Be that as it may, however, I have tried hard to keep the creative juices flowing.
Florence has been inspiring to me on several levels so far. The immense collection of artwork has taken my breath away, and the sculpture has surpassed anything I've ever seen in the states. I love the collection of sculptures that guards the Uffizi. The work contains true emotion and life that I have never before seen in sculpture. Of course, now that I actually have my card, I look forward to seeing even more brilliant works.
I am also astounded by the gaffiti I've seen in Florence-which far surpasses anything in Texas. I 've snapped some photos to keep as mementos.
Finally, Europe's natural landscape is also astounding to me. Going on the trip to Fiesole was great, and I was astounded by the beauty of the ladscape and the sky.
At any rate, I have been trying to keep up the sketches and hope to post some as soon as I can figure out the scanner.

Arrived in Italy, and so far have been pushed, pulled and relaxed.
Assortments of thoughts keep entering my mind, and like spaces; some stick
around, and some pass by and are washed into the abyss of all the things I
have thoughts or have been. Have seen or have said; most pieces of space
seem to be aligning with the thoughts that coincide with my days. We talk
about interconnectivity, we talk about Renaissance, we talk about E.O.
Wilson and his Ants, about Fairfeild Iowa and yoga flying; about DaVinci
and about gastronomy. We talk about politics less, and people more: about
weight less, and food more. Some things seem exactly the same, most things
have very small differences, and those are the things I notice. I miss the
green of land. I try to spend as much time as possible up in the hills. I
think it will increase, not decrease as time goes on. There is peace here,
it just takes some searching to find it. I like to be alone in the city
and in the hills; and with company for meals and wine. We'll see, just
where we get to - Just where I end up being.

let's hope this puppy works: I'm not going to lie, I sort of doubt the
whole thing.

Daniel Lubniewski Week 1
The way that I have been gathering things over the course of this week has been similar to the way that I was writing down my dreams about a week before I went to the school. I wandered around the city, on or off errands, keeping the assignment I was given in the back of my head and keeping a half eye out for things that might be relevant. After I experienced or observed something, I let it degest for a while in my head. I then took out a moleskin journal to write down my experiences, accompanying them with simple illustrations. Just about everything I wrote and drew was taken from memories of my experinces in Florence, which include interactions with people as well as various places and things i have seen.

graffiti girl
Yo kids. I am passionately intereted in the graffiti in this city. particularly the graffiti in the underground tunnel that runs below the train tracks by via minzoni--i still need to check out the other tunnels in other places. But I think it's interesting that in this city which is like the capital of classical drawing and painting, in a sense, there's a host of really beautiful graffiti. I wonder if there is a connection--perhaps because Florence has this history of valuing classical art, things like composition, color, craft, and line quality have imprinted themselves on the artistic value systems of even the young, modern generations of graffiti artists. But I'm not even sure if it is the incorporation of those traditional qualities which makes the graffiti so wonderful...

First Weeks in Florence
I spent Christmas day on an airplane into Paris. From there, my family and I travelled (with way too much luggage) to Venice, Rome, and finally Florence. It was incredibly hectic and stressful, but a wonderful trip nonetheless. I am definitely happy to have finally settled into my new home for the next semester and just want to find time to relax and enjoy the city before I start travelling all over the place again. I'm living with Rachel and Allison in a home near the center of the city. The leather market is right outside our door and the Duomo is just a few blocks away. I think it's a great place to live and Vincenzo, our "dad", cooks delicious meals for us during the week, makes his own bread, surprises us with chocolate, and has even provided us with wireless internet. What more could I ask for?
Nothing too exciting has happened yet... so the pictures are just random ones from my travelling thus far.
